New dawn: Sod turned at Bonteheuwel Infill housing project

Today, 16 May 2024, the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Carl Pophaim, and other dignitaries turned sod at the City’s new R140 million Bonteheuwel Infill housing project. The project comprises a total of 273 Breaking New Ground (BNG) State-subsidised houses and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, if all goes according to plan. 

'There is something special about turning the sod of a new housing development – it is a tangible action of our desire to bring dignity through human settlements delivery. So I am thrilled to be in Bonteheuwel today for the sod turning of this exciting new, well-located project. We will continue to do everything in our power to ensure the project is completed as soon as possible. 

'I look forward to visiting the project soon to hand over the keys to these houses to the new residents. We want to send a clear message: the City is committed to its housing projects and will not tolerate any form of extortion or criminality. We are ensuring that we will deliver to the people of Cape Town. The City is on a mission to create many new homeowners. One project at a time, we are building Cape Town, together,' said Councillor Pophaim.

As with all City projects, qualifying beneficiaries are objectively assessed in terms of the Housing Needs Register and the City's Allocation Policy, which is an objective tool, within a fair and independent process.
